Securing Your Lightweight Motorcycle or Moped

Motorcycle theft can be a serious concern, especially if you ride a lightweight bike that can be easily picked up and stolen by thieves. Although a motorcycle alarm can help with the heavier models, for those riding lightweight bikes, another way of securing your bike is often a necessity.

There are many types of locking systems that you can use to safeguard your bike, but not all of these will be appropriate for the lighter models. For example, chain locks and wheel locks may make it more difficult to ride your bike away, but if your bike can be lifted into the back of a truck or van, they will do little in terms of safeguarding your bike from theft.

One of your best lines of defense against theft can be simply using a strong security cable and lock to secure your bike to a stationary object. If you go this route, be sure that the object you lock it to cannot be removed, cut down or otherwise rendered ineffective against theft. You also should be sure to go with a quality cable that cannot be easily cut or picked. Some cables may have armoring function which will sound an alarm in the event of tampering.

In the event that your bike is stolen, you may want to consider a anti theft global positioning system (GPS) to help recover a lost bike. These devices are hidden on your bike and will provide tracking information that will help with the recovery of a stolen bike. There are also tracking devices that use radio frequencies. These anti theft devices will create a FM homing signal and they are often more affordable than a GPS device, but they are also not as precise and may only be able to narrow down the range to a mile radius. This can be a huge territory to cover during a recovery operation, particularly in a city environment.

Of course, one of the best steps you can take against motorcycle theft is using common sense. Try to avoid parking you bike in environments that are poorly lit or have poor visibility. If possible, avoid areas that are known to have frequent bike thefts. Taking these common sense measures along with a proper alarming system and recovery device, should deter many thieves. Finally, you may also want to consider taking out theft insurance your ride to provide even more peace of mind.
